Welcome back toTasting Tuesday! This week, we’re ringing in the spring season with Little ‘Nator, the rascally, slightly better-behaved cousin of Tröegs Brewing’s Troegenator. Lighter in body but not in flavor, this springtime lager is crisp, complex, and absolutely worth a spot in your seasonal rotation.
Founded in 1997 by brothers John and Chris Trogner,Tröegs Brewing Company has always marched to the beat of its own brew kettle. Based in Hershey, PA, the brewery is known for blending family values, experimental small batches, and an undying curiosity into every pint. From best-sellers like Perpetual IPA to cult-favorites like Mad Elf, Tröegs keeps things playful, innovative, and deeply rooted in Pennsylvania pride.
Style: Bock (a.k.a. Springtime’s comeback kid)
ABV: 5.5%
Color: Light bronze with amber highlights
Hops: El Dorado, Hersbrucker, Tradition
Malts: Pilsner, Caramel
Pours: A clean amber-bronze with a fluffy off-white head that fades like winter (finally).
Nose: Toasted caramel and floral hops with a little whiff of stone fruit for good measure.
Flavor: Bready malt backbone with just enough fruity esters and hop bitterness to keep it refreshing, not cloying. Think crusty bread, peach skin, and the faintest floral snap.
Mouthfeel: Medium body, chewy but crisp. A touch of carbonation gives it some bounce, and the finish is clean with lingering malt sweetness.
Little ‘Nator is what happens when a big, burly doppelbock decides to chill out and wear shorts. It’s flavorful without being overwhelming and smooth without being boring. It’s built for fire pits, patio hangs, and those rare spring days that aren’t just winter in disguise.
If you’re a lager lover looking for a beer with character and balance, this one’s calling your name. And yes, if it sticks around all year, we wouldn’t be mad.
Cheers to the seasonal MVP of the fridge! 🍻
